Off Duty is Jason Dussault’s latest body of work, a series of mosaic surfboard sculptures depicting super-heroes and comic book characters in various tongue-in-cheek “Off Duty” scenarios. Off Duty is whimsical reminder that even though we all mature into adulthood, we should never lose the connection with the innocence of our inner child.

Issued by the legendary company Powell Peralta, The Ripper was an instant classic. A symbolic skeleton originally designed by Vernon Courtlandt Johnson, it defined the look and feel of the teams crew of skaters, known as The Bones Brigade. This awe inspiring posse has produced some of the greats, including, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero and, Lance Mountain. The image of The Ripper tearing through the deck almost says, "We are coming to get you."
Santa Monica California. The mecca for many skaters. The stories of the greats spread throughout the world and images of empty swimming pools come skate bowls were blazed in every aspiring skaters mind. But Santa Monica wasn't all sunshine and crashing waves. To get respect from the locals you had to prove yourself. Dogtown represented the upper echelon and, with hall of famers like Adams, Alva and Oki, Team Zephyr became a stronghold of talent.
One of the pioneers of street skating and credited with inventing the wall ride, Natas was a true artist on a deck. After winning a surf competition in Dogtown, he was awarded with a skateboard from Santa Monica Airlines, they would eventually release his hallmark deck featuring a panther clawing through the graphic, an image drawn by local legend, Kevin Ancell. Rail slides, board slides and 50/50 grinds cemented Natas, and his fierce panther motif, into the skateboard Hall of Fame.
For those of you who don not know Jim Phillips, he designed some of the most iconic and well-known Santa Cruz skateboard graphics from the eighties, like the Screaming Hand, the Slasher graphic for Keith Meek’s pro model boards, several graphics for Rob Roskopp’s boards and many other graphics His artwork is so iconic that it has even been used for different collaborations. To name a few: Grenade Gloves (2007), Puma Shoes (2008), SkullCandy headphones (2011), and more recently Stance Socks. To top it off,Jeremy Scott now uses Jim Phillips’ graphics, exposing a counter culture’s ‘sacred’ art to the masses. This is my tribute to him.
In August 1969, the massive, three-day Woodstock Music & Art Fair had proved that hundreds of thousands of young people could gather peacefully even in a seemingly chaotic environment rich with sex, drugs and rock and roll. Four months later, it would become clear that Woodstock owed its success not to the inherent peacefulness of the 1960s youth culture, but to the organizational acumen of the event's producers. That idea was proven in the violent, uncontrolled chaos of the disastrous Altamont Speedway Free Festival, held on this day in 1969 in the northern California hills 60 miles east of San Francisco. Created as the first superheroine, Wonder Woman, helped bring equality into the minds, and hands of many. An Amazonian Goddess blessed with strength, wisdom and virtue, her character brought awareness to the importance of Women's rights. Comics have always reflected not only the mystical, but also the voice of the public, an illustrated framework capturing a glimpse of society. Wonder Woman used her powers to defeat prejudice, not only with her Lasso of Truth, but also with her resolve. Jason's humanistic and artistic natures also strike a balance. An advocate of equality, Jason has highlighted the world's original female hero, with the respect she rightfully deserves.
Ushering in a rare form of vigilante justice, Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne, sets his sights on cleaning up the streets of Gotham City. HIs resolve is constantly tested, yet time and time again, his true nature and compassion show their unified front. Jason creates in the much the same manner: aggressiveness balanced with character. While the comic book defender of hope grasps for his utility belt, Jason reaches for his tools, and each instrument acts in unison to create their own impact and encourage the winds of change.
The God Of Thunder heralds from the mystical land of Asgaard, his trusty war hammer, Mjolinir, is guided by his deft hand, much like Jason wields the power of ceramic callipers to create his otherworldly mosaics. Not only the son of Odin, or the brother of trickster Loki, Thor is a figure that emits power and morality. Drawn to the plights of humanity, he chooses to watch over Earth and help safeguard our lonely planet, a blue orb that spins in the midst of a vast galaxy. With all his energy and raw strength, Thor maintains a balance between right and wrong, making him one of the most respected heroes in the comic universe. Jason has been able to capture Thor's energy in this piece with a striking physicality and range of depth that makes the God of Thunder seem truly alive.
Mans best friend can certainly have more bite than bark. In the case of Jason’s piece, Fido, the hellhound is released from it’s innocent form and takes on a beastly side. This representation of inner struggle in the guise of familiarity is Jason’s way of showing obedience to his artistic calling.
A character born with the proverbial “silver spoon” in his mouth, Richie Rich represents the idea of financial independence. The allure of the all mighty dollar and the catchphrase, “flaunt it if you’ve got it”, is brought to life in this piece. A reminder that achievement is not only inspirational, it’s also a vehicle for motivation and a building block for creating a better life.
The inner rage that transforms Bruce Banner into The Incredible Hulk also lives beneath Jason’s mild mannered surface. A metamorphosis in which passion is culminated. The smashing of porcelain leaves fragments in a state in which they can be rearranged, much like the gamma particles that create one of the most insurmountable beings known to mankind.
Sometimes greatness is thrust upon us. Much like Superman’s descent from Krypton to the planet Earth, Jason has landed on the modern art scene with an undeniable impact. For all the strength that seems to be tethered to otherworldliness, there is also a very human element that connects us to the piece through our continual search for power. The Man of Steel reminds us that heroes do exist, not only in our imaginations, but also in every day life.
Few people know that the jaw is the strongest muscle in the human body. Capable of creating hundreds of pounds of pressure, it takes on a devious form when 007 villain, JAWS, applies his rigid teeth to his unsuspecting victims. This piece creates a juxtaposition, having been brought to life by a blend of ceramics and decorative trinkets, the delicate nature of which our antagonist could easily crush to dust.
Lego is proof that good things come in small packages. The ultimate building blocks for imagination, these miniature pieces, once combined, can be formed to create structures that amaze. This particular imagery depicts a Lego character emblazoned with tattoos, a whimsical reminder that even though we all mature into adulthood, we should never lose the connection with the innocence of our inner child.
In this piece, the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy is represented through the iconography of his helmet. More than just an extension of his armor, Boba Fett’s headgear is a symbol of self preservation. Although born as a clone, this skilled warrior always had an awareness of his identity. Loyal to a fault and serving The Empire, his adventures would assumedly end when he was lost to the cavernous depths of the Sarlacc. To the surprise of many, he survived, and ultimately solidified his status as one of the most ruthless figures in the universe. Although heralded by The Dark Side of the Force, he reminds us to never give up and never stop fighting for what you believe in.
Loyal to a fault, the Stormtrooper, even when his comrades are being splayed by light sabres at the hands of the Jedi, fights for the Empire. Although, as a band of clones, they each seem to have an individual recognition of the power of the dark side of the force. They respect it, they fear it, they embrace it. And so, such is art and, Jason's exploration of the mysterious energy of creation is encapsulated in this piece. The second helmet mosaic in Jason's Star Wars homage, The Stormtrooper is not only the front line of the Empire, but a constant reminder that family and, a sense of belonging are paramount.
